Chilhowie came together around 1992 after Paul had played in various bands in Nashville. He teamed up with Green Brookhart on bass after the two had played together prior with Pagan Luggage. Shannon Pollard, grandson of the legendary Country Hall of Fame singer Eddy Arnold, played the role of Ringo on drums.
Chilhowie was a popular Nashville trio in which Paul played guitar and sang the lead vocals. Chilhowie was a psycho mixture of alternative punk, Americana and feedback, sort of like Lollapalooza on a Dead show. Chilhowie shows often included special appearances by Fred Toler as Psycho Elvis.
In 1994 The Nashville Scene Reader's Poll voted Chilhowie runner up to the Homecoming Queen as the second best band in the city. That year they recorded the EP All Mixed Up, an eclecting recording that sounded somewhat like REM with clarinet and flute.
Chilhowie recorded
Happy Hour in 1998/1999, releasing it in 1999. It was
recorded at the famed 16th Ave. Sound Studios in Nashville, Tennessee and engineered by recording wizard Mike Griffith, as well as mastered by Tommy Dorsey
at Masterfonics.
Happy Hour features some of the Chilowie classics such as Loser and Head, as
well as Paul's favorite Fuck.
