"40 years ago, an album like this might have gotten a lot of radio play and Dougherty might have had a shot at singer-songwriter stardom (or at least the cult status of a Nick Drake). Dougherty likely would've been signed to a major label and (at the very least) played in clubs all over the U.S. to a passionate and growing fanbase."

In 2008 and 2009, Paul Dougherty recorded the cd Grace Under Water, a collection of 12 artistic and powerful songs written and recorded by Paul at his home studio and released on Bake It Black Records.
The songs on Grace Under Water are a departure from most of the past works from Paul Dougherty. These new recordings have noticeable influences from melodic writers and groups such as Nick Drake, Bob Dylan, the Beach Boys,
and Townes Van Zandt, as well as other artists. The sounds range from Indie Pop to organic Americana with slight elements towards ambient electronic music.
Grace Under Water includes such songs as the Beach Boys sounding lullaby Zoe, the rock and blues songs Highly Flammable and Funky Monkey Blues, Americana tunes such as Waterfront, Rusted Jesus and Time, as well as the stark and lovely tunes The Craving, First Steps, Across the Great Divide and more.
Lyrically, the songs have little to do with the typical boy/girl scenario that’s been beaten to death. Many of the songs on the recording deal with parenthood and the sublime but bleak existence facing civilization today, ala a more subdued version of
The Road.

Paul Dougherty is a multi-instrumentalist. However, his main crafts lie as a songwriter and singer, as well as a guitarist. His past recordings were a mixture of punk and alternative rock, as well as the departure into Americana. Today his songs and singing venture more into mature and artistic themes and sounds. Grace Under Water is an incredibly strong work showing the craft and originality of a veteran musician.
